For the past few weeks, I've had the title of this posting in my head. I don't remember where the thought originated, nor had I ever read the full verse from which it comes. But even without looking at the full saying of Prophet Jesus, the meaning resonated with my soul. So today, I finally had to get it out of my head and onto paper. And unlike most of my posts, this one came in the language of poetry.
Like a Child...
I long to be more like my son
Ever kind, ever forgiving, ever loving
He cares not whether clothes match,
bodies are tall or short,
skinny or fat,
abodes clean or dirty...
He loves us all the same.
And when I witness his small acts of kindness,
I realize the lesson God is teaching us.
That it is silly to ask those around us to fit into our standards of beauty, handsomeness, love
or even to create "standards."
That it is against our purest selves to hold on to hurt feelings forever
or to carry an ego on my sleeve
For my son only asks for love and nourishment
His spirit is one of forgiveness and compassion.
When hurt Saturday, on Sunday he smiles.
When he feels sad, he cries no matter who is around
When he feels like dancing, he moves
When he feels like singing, he bursts into song.
When he sees an ant, he become enthralled and happy
We too have this spirit.
buried deep within our soul is the same joy,
the same peace
the same happiness.
continue to peel the layers of arrogance, jealousy, hate, greed
and relish in the space that is pure love
For I long to be like a child.
“And He (Jesus Christ) said: ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matthew 18:3-4)
