Reading Questions
Use Jihad of the Soul to jump start a deep conversation around issues of religious identity, family life, American popular culture, racism and of course Muslim Singlehood. The author included several reflection questions at the end of chapters. Here are more thought-provokers to get the conversation started at your next book group meeting, or use them as a personal guide as you read.
1. Many non-Muslims who read the book comment that the experiences of Muslims are similar to those of other Americans. Do you agree? Why or Why not?
2. Which character/story do you identify with most? If that’s too difficult to answer, which person’s story do you feel is most important to bring to light?
3. The experiences of gay Muslims are not often included in publications on Muslims. Why do you think the author chose to include a short snippet of their lives?
4. The book argues that a lack of open dialogue in communities have contributed to feelings of shame, what is your experience?
5. The author suggest that Muslim communities begin to foster a “culture of marriage.” What should that entail?
6. Often, Jihad of the Soul is labeled a “youth book” or a book for youth. Why do you think some adults over the age of 50 choose not to address the issues raised?
7. How do you believe your community can best address the issues raised?
